Dulcimer
Tuning Pegs
Arabesque Design
This dulcimer was purchased in about 2007 at Sound of Music in Bar Harbor, Maine
The Appalachian dulcimer originated with settlers to the Appalachian mountains in the 1800s. It is a lap zither and thus is part of the zither family. There were many lap zithers in Europe from Norway to France, but the dulcimer seems to have its origin with the Sheitholtz, a German lap zither. It was brought over by German immigrants to Pennsylvania, where it worked its way in to the Irish, Scottish, and English cultures present in the Appalachian Mountains. (Gardner’s Dulcimer Shop, n.d.)
